Start Date : November 8, 2012
End Date : November 10, 2012
November 8 - 11, 2012
Discover a unique sense of place at Penn Center during its Heritage Days Celebration.
Heritage Days is a homecoming for all and a time that visitors from all over the country will converge on St. Helena Island in an exciting three-day event showcasing the history of Penn School and the rich cultural legacy of the Gullah Geechee people of the Sea Island. Revel in the food, music, performances, seminars, arts and crafts, a parade, and cultural demonstrations by the Gullah Geechee descendants of former West African slaves in a beautiful historic setting, formerly known as the Penn Normal Agricultural and Industrial School.
Since its inception in 1981, Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration has grown from a single day of events and food, to four days of festive songs, meals, performers, displays and other events. Actually, the occasion of Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration is a not new notion. The events were carried out annually from the early 1900's until Penn School was closed in 1948. During that period, the celebration was called "Harvest Day". This truly reinforces why Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration is so vital. For at Penn Center a meaningful legacy exists that preserves and promotes our history and culture.
